Biography
Lieutenant General Elias Mawela (born in 1966-67) is a South African high-ranking officer in the Police Service. He has held senior managing positions at the national level since 2004.
Elias was a joint Chairperson of the National Joint Operational Intelligence Structure (NATJOINTS).
In 2019, the career cop became the new Gauteng provincial commissioner. He succeeded Deliwe De Lange, who retired in October 2018.

Elias Mawela was born in 1966-67 in South Africa. He attended primary and secondary schools in the country. He hails from an average family.

Mawela holds a National Diploma in Policing and a Bachelor’s Degree in Administration.
Career
Elias Mawela was enlisted into the South African Police Service in 1984. He has over thirty-four years of experience. In 2011, he became the divisional commissioner of Operational Response Services.
Police Minister Bheki Cele appointed the Lieutenant-General as Gauteng provincial commissioner. Cele and General Khehla Sitole announced the appointment at the Mamelodi police station.
Elias served as a divisional commissioner of operational response services.
The former provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Deliwe De Lange, resigned in 2018. He left office following allegations of corruption. Since 2004, Elias has occupied several senior positions.
Mawela will work with eight deputy provincial commissioners. He has served as a joint Chairperson of the National Joint Operational Intelligence Structure.
Appointment
Police Minister Bheki Cele and the national police commissioner General Khehla Sitole announced Elias’s appointment at the Mamelodi police station.
Mawela replaced Lt Gen De Lange, who left the police after thirty-five years in October 2018. Lt Gen De Lange and four others were reportedly linked to tender fraud in November 2018.
The Johannesburg Specialised Commercial Crimes Court granted them bail.
Police Minister Bheki Cele says a national approach is key for fighting crime in the province and reducing crime in the country.
