Biography

Bathabile Dlamini (born September 10, 1962) is a South African politician. She is the leader of the African National Congress Women’s League.

The prominent politician has served as a member of the ANC National Executive Committee. She has worked with the Congress of South Africa Trade Unions.

In 1991, Dlamini joined the interim leadership formed to build the ANC Women’s League in the KwaZulu-Natal regions. Some years later, she became the Deputy Secretary General of the ANCWL.

Bathabile served as a member of the NEC of the African National Congress and the National Working Committee. She was the Minister of Social Development and Women in the Presidency.

Early years

Bathabile Dlamini was born on September 10, 1962, in Nquthu, Umzinyathi, KwaZulu-Natal. Her family raised her in Nkandla, Matshensikazi, and Imbali, Pietermaritzburg.

Education

Ms Dlamini obtained a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Social Work from the University of Zululand in 1989. She passed with distinction. 

Career

Dlamini became interested in politics at an early age. She was a founding member of the Imbali Youth Organization in 1983, an affiliate of the UDF.

Her participation in politics continued as she became a member of the South African National Students Congress in 1985. At that time, few women took part in school and community politics.

Later in 1991, she joined the interim leadership created to build the ANC Women’s League structures in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

Bathabile joined the first Regional Executive Committee of the ANCWL after an election. She was the Regional Secretary for a year from 1992 to 1993.

She was a social worker at Pietermaritzburg Cripples Association, an NGO, for two years. She won an election in late 1993 as the Deputy Secretary General of the ANCWL.

In 1998, Dlamini became the Secretary General of the ANCWL. After serving for two terms, she left office in 2008. She became a Member of Parliament in 2001.

Dlamini was elected to the National Executive Committee of the ANC and the National Working Committee, Polokwane, in 2007. She worked as a member of the ANC in the Presidency as a sectoral work coordinator in 2008.

The prominent politician is a member of the National Executive Committee of the ANC Women’s League. 

Bathabile served as the Deputy Minister of Social Development from May 2009 to October 2010. She became the Minister of Social Development in 2010.

Ms Dlamini was re-elected to the National Executive Committee during the ANC National Conference in Mangaung in 2012.

After the August 2015 election, she became the President of the African National Congress Women’s League. She also served as the Minister of Women in the Presidency.

Personal Life

Bathabile Dlamini is a proud mother, and her daughter Skhumbuzo Mazibuko made headlines. She was in the news for her business with Sassa acting CEO Pearl Bhengu.

The duo is the director of the business Umnotho Wabafazi Biz, registered in 2015. Skhumbuzo was a teenager of 19 years old during the business registration.

Car

Bathabile drives one of the most expensive and luxury cars in South Africa. She procured an R1.3 million German sedan for her official use in Pretoria. in late 2016.
