Early Life
Dr Gwen Ramokgopa was born and raised in Atteridgeville, a township west of Pretoria, South Africa.
Education
Gwen matriculated at Phiri Kolobe High School. She obtained an MBChB and an MPH degree at MEDUNSA, now Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University.
Career
Dr Gwen Ramokgopa was the Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the former Pretoria City Council in 1995. She worked as a medical officer at Ga-Rankuwa Hospital. She later became the National Health Programme Manager at the Independent Development Trust.
Though she quit her medical practice to focus more on her political ambition, her political position is often related to healthcare.
In 2010, she became the Deputy Health Minister and served until 2014. Later, she held the position of Gauteng MEC.
In 2015, Gwen Ramokgopa became the Chancellor of the Tshwane University of Technology. She is a Member of the Executive Council of Health for the Gauteng Provincial Government.
Current Position
At the ANC’s 55th National Conference in December 2022, Gwen received a last-minute nomination twice from the conference floor. She accepted to stand as Treasurer-General but rejected to stand as Deputy Secretary-General.
On December 19, she emerged winner of the election with 41.76% of the vote in a crowded race. She is the current Treasurer-General of the African National Congress.
Mayor (2006 – 2010)
Gwen Ramokgopa was the mayor of Tshwane between 2006 and 2010. Though her tenure was reportedly slammed as the worst in the country.
The city failed to deliver effective public services like potable water, housing, and security. Other services like refuse removal and sanitation weren’t rendered effectively. In 2009, Tshwane owed R37 billion.

Gwen Ramokgopa is happily married to Allen Lephoko. The couple has three children and is also a grandparent. Gwen is a Christian and enjoys reading.
Brother
Dr. Ramokgopa is the aunt of the former Tshwane regional chairperson Kgosientso Ramokgopa. He was her successor for the Mayor of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality in 2010.
Controversy
In 2009, Independent Online reported the harassment her family and bodyguards caused. They harassed photographers and reporters at the Hatfield Community Court.
Ramokgopa, who served as Tshwane mayor, was present for their daughter’s trial for alleged drug possession. Though she looked calm, her husband and bodyguards appeared aggressive. They reportedly roughed up the cameraman and photographers.
Allen grabbed Daniel Born by the collar. Daniel, who worked for The Times, laid an assault charge against him. This incident happened after sneaking their daughter Lerato Lephoko in and out of court through the cells.
