Early Life

Brenda Mtambo was born on March 3, 1983, in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. She grew up in Umlazi, Durban, under the care of strict grandparents.

Music has been a thing she had a passion for since childhood. She discovered her musical talent when she was in Grade one. She started to lead and sing songs during the school assembly.

As a shy girl, music is the way to express herself as a young child. Mtambo had a musical childhood experience that she discovered could be a successful career. 

The singer hails from a humble beginning and wanted to change her circumstances through education.

Education

Mtambo studied in Umlazi, ­outside Durban, South Africa. She graduated with a BCom in accounting from the University of Durban-Westville.

Career

Though the artist is doing well in the music industry, at first, it was something she did in her spare time. She decided to make a living from music after becoming a member of the gospel group Joyous Celebration.

Mtambo stayed with the music group Joyous Celebration for a decade. The group gained her travel and singing exposure. She traveled and performed in other countries in Africa and beyond.

Mtambo gained experience performing to a large audience and began a solo career. She produced her debut album Inspired through Joyous Records. The launching of the album took place in Sandon in 2013.

Brenda has done backing vocals for a host of many prominent local artists. She has shared the stage with artists like Hugh Masekela, ­Sibongile Khumalo, and Judith Sephuma.

Other artists, she has sung for include Lira, Thandiswa Mazwai, and Jonas Gwangwa. The versatile singer refers to her music genre as Afro-soul/Jazz.

Prominent musician Thami Shobede featured her in the song Letting Go. She has also collaborated with House music duo Revolution.
