How much is a Passport in South Africa? (Fees and Dha-73 application)

South Africans who wish to travel to other places in the world can now check the cost of getting a passport. Daily, people leave and return to South Africa for many reasons.

The good news is that you can apply for a passport at your nearest Home Affairs Office. You are required to fill a DHA-73 form or complete online registration.

Following a successful online application, you will still need to visit a DHA office to capture your biometric information.

Tourist Passport

In South Africa, this type of passport is issued to citizens above 16 years of age and is valid for ten years from the issued date.

Requirements

  • Identity Document
  • Two-color passport photos
  • Fingerprints will be taken

Duration: Ten (10) weeks

Child’s Passport

In South Africa, citizens under the age of 16 are issued a child’s passport. The passport is valid for 5 years from the date of issue.

Requirements

  • Parent’s Identity (ID) and the child’s birth certificate
  • Two (2) color passport size photos of the child
  • Death certificate (for deceased parents)
  • A copy of the Court’s appointment letter (for child’s guardians)

Duration: Ten (10) days to process

Maxi Tourist Passport

Frequent travelers are expected to get a Maxi Tourist Passport and it is issued to citizens aged 16 years and above. 

It is a document containing 48 pages providing space for more visa pages. The passport is valid for ten (10) years from the issued date.

  • Identity Document
  • Two-color passport photos
  • Fingerprints

Charge: R600

Duration: Takes about 10 days to process.

Emergency Travel Certificate

For urgent South African travelers, this is the most suitable for you. Citizens who can’t wait long for time to process a passport application can apply for the emergency travel certificate. 

The passport is valid for only 9 months from the issued date and can only be used for a single journey

Requirements

  • Identity Document
  • Two-color passport photos
  • Fingerprints
  • A valid reason for urgent travel

Charge: R140 (you will be required to pay an extra R400 to get your proper tourist passport when you return).

Duration: About one week.

Official Passport

This is issued to citizens of South Africa in the use of the Public service or government institution. Officials who need to travel across the country shore on government official business. It is valid for five (5) years.

Requirements

  • Identity Document
  • Two-color passport photos
  • Fingerprints
  • Letter from your employer

Charge: Free

Document for Travel Purposes

Permanent residence holders in South Africa unable to obtain a travel document from their country of origin can request for these documents. 

For example refugees and stateless persons residing in South Africa by law. It is valid for five (5) years from the issued date.

Requirements

  • Proof of identity
  • Two-color passport size photos
  • Fingerprints
  • Proof of permanent residence as well as written confirmation from your country of origin that they cannot issue you with a passport.

Charge: R400

Duration: About 10 days.
