He was born on 28 October 1958 in Freren, Emsland district, Germany. As of 2019, Ernst Middendorp is aged 61 years.
He graduated from the University of Bielefeld, Germany in 1986 where he studied economics, politics, and history.
In 1987, he went to two institutions, the Gesamthochschule Paderborn Institute and Computer College Rheine, where he earned degrees in special economics, computer studies and studied to be a system analyst.
He attained his UEFA Pro License (Fussball-Lehrer) from the Deutsche Sporthochschule in Köln, Germany in 1996.
He has coached professional football on the highest level for almost 20 years in Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Besides, he gained experience analyzing the FIFA world cup tournament (2006-2010). He also analysed the EURO tournament in 2012.
He took over as head coach of DSC Arminia Bielefeld in the 3rd Bundesliga, this marked the beginning of his coaching career.
In 1996 Ernst was promoted to Bundesliga and was elected as coach of the Century in 2005.
He was the coach of South African Castle Premiership team Kaizer Chiefs from the early 2005-2006 season to 5 March 2007.
His team won the SAA Supa 8 trophy at the beginning of the 2006–07 season.
