Teacher Assistant Duties, Responsibilities & Qualifications

In every structure and organization, including education an assistant is important. These assistants, aka. teaching assistant holds an important position for teachers. They are very important in the development of pupils (both social and academic) inside and outside the classroom walls.

Since teachers can not perform all the tasks, these assistants fill the voids to prepare an academic-friendly environment. These assistants occupy various positions in the academic sector. They are found in both secondary and primary academic institutions.


Academic institutions demand certain training to occupy certain positions. Similarly, Education Assistants are expected to possess certain skills. To be able to effectively carry out his/her duties some of these qualifications are required.

  • NQF level 4 (Matric) or (NQF6/7 or higher)
  • Some level of teaching experience

Permit the use of EA for Education Assistant and TA for Teachers Assistant. The primary objectives for EA are to support and assistance when needed to the educators and learners.

The level of education and skills has a huge role to play also to determining the learning environment. The role of the TA is indispensable in the modern education system.

Working during the working hours under the academic program, EA tries to help instructors.

They provide extra hands to assist instructors with tasks to help create a conducive learning environment and atmosphere for learners.

Here are some duties and responsibilities of an education assistant in schools.

Offer Assistance with Lessons

With the educator or teacher being the supervisor, the Teacher Assistant provides extra support. Students in need of understanding a particular topic, course, or project could receive extra help from EAs.

Close Watch on Students

Education Assistants are also trained to be able to monitor or track what the students are doing. They try to make sure students maintain a safe academic atmosphere and relationship. They take the stats and records to the teachers and offer advice. 

Special Needs Support

Students got not only have academic needs, but they also have other needs which could be non-academic. These needs include mobility, respect, self-esteem, hygiene, peer relationship advice, and more. They communicate with students and/or pupils to achieve their objectives.

Accompany Students

Being an EA creates an avenue for travel, teachers go with students for field trips, excursions, and other activities.

Support Programs

Though there is personnel trained in the field, the Education Assistant but could also carry out these functions. Most institutions have a school counselor, however, EAs could act under the supervision of trained personnel in the field.

Support in Marking Continuous Assignment 

Tests, home works, and class projects are required in many, if not all, academic institutions.

Education assistants play the role of assisting teachers in conducting, supervising, and marking CAs. They also assist teachers with the process of recording these marks into the reports.
