Zahara (born Bulelwa Mkutukana; 9th of November, 1988, Eastern Cape) is a Singer and songwriter. She won the Best Female Southern Africa during the African Muzik Magazine Awards in 2014.

She was born on November 9, 1988, in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Her birth name is Bulelwa Mkutukana. She was born into the family Mr. Nokhaya (father) and Mrs. Mlamli Mkutukana.

Zahara is the sixth child out of seven and showed how much she loved music at age 6. Still, on her love for music, she drew much attention to herself. She was appointed the lead singer of Phumlani, a local Sunday school choir.

She was popularly known as “Spinach”, during her childhood days. Unfortunately for her, she lost her younger brother in East London in July 2014. 

Zahara mentioned going through a period of depression after his death.

She is a songwriter, poet, singer, recording artist, and performer. The dawn of her singing career can be traced to the days she sang on the streets of East London.

Her style of music is a combination of styles that have been made popular by Tracy Chapman and India Arie. Zahara sings in Xhosa, her native language, and English.

Her music has been classified in a way that does not fit tightly as “Afrosoul”.

She released her debut album titled, “Loliwe” in 2011. The sale of her first issue was completed within 3 days. The album reached double-platinum status in 19 days.

Zahara dropped her debut live DVD, ft. LeRoy Bell, X-factor USA contestant, and reached platinum in one day.

She performed a private beside concert at the home of former president Nelson Mandela in 2012. “She composed a song titled “Nelson Mandela” in his honor and released it as an EP.”

In 2017, she signed with Warner Music South Africa and released her fourth studio album, Mgodi. She is also the brand ambassador for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital.

She confirmed that her boyfriend, Ian Sibiya, proposed late last year. Zahara says he surprised her when he asked for her hand in marriage.

“My parents were in Joburg and he called his parents. While we were all sitting together he started talking and asked for my hand in marriage,”.

 “They’re going to my home for lobola negotiations,”. 

 “I wanted to keep it to myself and family until everything is done properly, this is why I am not wearing the ring,” she explained.
