Phathutshedzo Makwarela (born 26 July 1984) is a celebrated South African producer and writer. His works are visible in the local soap operas he has produced.
Together with Gwydion Beynon, he owns the production company Tshedza Pictures. The company boasts of receiving an award and producing popular telenovelas and soap operas.
The acclaimed serials including The River, a 1Magic Telenovela is their best work. It bagged eleven Golden Horn Awards during the 14th South African Film and Television Awards (SAFTA).
At the international level, the telenovela has also gained recognition. It was a nominee for an Emmy Award.
In 2013, Phathu began to work with an M-Net broadcaster occupying the role of the head writer.

Though after his high school days, he requested his uncle to speak to his parents. He wanted to convince them to allow him to pursue a TV career through his uncle.
For his high school academic pursuit, he attended S.J. Van Der Merwe Technical High School.
In the school located in Lebowakgomo, Limpopo, Phathu studied motor mechanics and came out in flying colors.
With the approval of his parents, he enrolled at the Tshwane University of Technology, Pretoria. In the institution, he studied TV and Film Production.
The journey of his career began when he interned at Soul City. Then he was a writer at Muvhango both are popular television soap operas.
As a writer, he has written scripts for many telenovelas in South Africa.
He works with his colleague Gwydion Beynon since 2013. They started to work together after landing the role of the head writer in Rockville. After working for the Fergusons on the soap opera, they forged ahead.
They have produced several telenovelas and soap operas under the Tshedza Pictures including;
- The River
- The Republic
- Giyani: Land of Blood
- The Queen
Though he has written many soap operas that have made waves in the entertainment industry, he admitted that the road to where he stands today wasn’t smooth.
At first, some of the ideas he sent to production houses were rejected but that did not make him give up.
Moreover, he did not have the confidence from the sight of the whites being the head writers, and blacks were only given writing roles.
He has however managed to make a name for himself in the industry.
He credits the success he recorded to the Fergusons, Winnie Serite, Gwydion Beynon, and Multichoice.
Together with his colleague, Gwydion Beynon, Phathu no doubt makes it on the list of the best scriptwriters the country has produced.
