Mmabatho Montsho (born 19 October 1983 in Soweto) is an award-winning South African actress, director, and fashion designer. The elegant and beautiful woman has landed several roles that match her looks and earned her prominence.

She is best known for landing the roles of Lumka Dhlomo in Generations and Thembi Phakathi in Rhythm City.

She is familiar to many television viewers for appearing in many television serials. Another role that further gained her prominence is the role of Lerato in Jacob’s Cross, an M-Net drama series.

Background

She was born on 19 October 1983 at the then Baragwanath Hospital, Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa. She was born into a family of 6 and has three siblings – two brothers and one sister.

Mmabatho had most of her childhood experiences in Carletonville, the Free State. As a young girl, she also spent her early life at the City of Ekurhuleni with her parents and siblings.

After she left school, she created the fashion label Black Olive Designs. Launching the fashion label was a collaborative effort between her and a high school friend.

They designed and offered clothes at the B&B Rooftop market. They recorded a huge success after their line was displayed at the 2004 South African Fashion Week.

Mmabatho Montsho did an Audiovisual multimedia course at the University of South Africa.

She studied at Greenside High School, where her interest in fashion grew stronger. After she was done with high school, she furthered her studies at the University of South Africa.

At UNISA, she did an Audiovisual multimedia course. She chose the course because of her love for arts and languages. 

Career

She appeared as Lerato in Jacob’s Cross in 2007. Her character in the M-Net drama series is a materialistic woman and wife of the lead character Jacob.

Mmabatho is playing the starring role of Thembi Phakati in the e.tv soap opera Rhythm City.

The actress has received nominations and won acting awards including a Style Award and one of Cosmopolitan’s Awesome Women of 2007.

In 2007, the actress became one of Ekurhuleni’s ambassadors. In April 2009, she became the host of Artcha, an SABC2 arts and culture magazine show. She replaced Anel Alexander from season 3 of the show.

She co-presented alongside Katleho Sinavasan on season two of the SABC1 reality series Play Your Part in 2012.

She was among the judges of the SABC3 reality competition series The Final Cut in 2017.

As a director, she is the brain behind the e.tv soap opera Scandal! More on her directing credit is the SABC1 sitcom Thuli noThulani.

Private Life

The actress is in a relationship with the EFF spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi.

Ancestral Calling

Apart from her acting and directing profession, she is also has an ancestral calling. Montsho shared with the Daily Sun that she had gone to thwasa and was done with her training in 2012. 

According to her, she kept the matter private and at that time had not to figure out how to deal with it.

She had to leave the spotlight for a while to focus on her calling and is happy that it had been completed.

She started to have visions from a young age and knew her ancestors were calling her. Though she resisted at first until she couldn’t anymore.

However, she did not share if her calling is to be a diviner (sangoma) or a herbalist (inyanga).
