Lira (born Lerato Lira Molapo; 14 March 1979 in Daveyton) is a South African singer. The Sesotho translation of her name is “love” and she speaks four (4) languages.
After she emerged winner of a competition for young talents, singers and songwriters, she began a live stage performance at the age of 16. She then started singing cover versions and self-penned songs.
Her date of birth is on 14th March 1979 and her place of birth is in Daveyton, South Africa. Lira is 41 years old (2020).
The name of Lira’s parents is Khanyapa Molapo and Buyi Radebe Lichaba. Her name translated to ‘love ‘ in Sisetho.
Lira was married to Robin Kohl in 2009 after they dated for five (5) years since 2004. The couple was joined together in holy matrimony in a private wedding in Mauritius.
The couple dedicated most of their time to their music career and revealed that it was the reason why they did not have any children.
In the year 2000, Lira was found by Arthur Mafokate, a musician and producer, and signed her under his record label, 999 Music.
After three (3) years, 2003, she dropped her first album titled, All My Love, with the help of her label.
She left 999 Music to team up with Victor Mngomezulu, a keyboardist, Tshepo Sekele, a bassist, and Robin Kohl, a producer.
In 2006 Lira dropped her debut major-label album on Sony Music Africa. The song became the most played local song at radio stations in South Africa.
She received five (5) nominations at the South African Grammy Awards. She was nominated for Best New Artist, Best Female Artist, Best R&B Album, Best Single, and Best Video.
Lira dropped her sophomore album titled, Soul in Mind in 2008, which gained many South African Award Nominations. She went home with the Album of the Year prize.
In 2009, she dropped the DVD Live in Concert: A celebration that showcased a performance at the Carnival City Casino in Boksburg. The DVD earned triple platinum status.
In January 2011, Lira dropped her third studio album titled, Return to Love and also released the five-track The Lira EP the same year.
