He worked for Post Natal as a freelance writer and with time became a regular worker. He covered politics, sports, and entertainment.

In 1983, Pillay attempted to gain admission into the university the second time but was unsuccessful due to a car accident. He went back to Natal Natal Newspapers and worked as a Political Reporter on Post.
