Johan Stemmet (born on 9 February 1952 in Springbok) is an award-winning producer and presenter. The television legend is popular for being the host on the long-running show Noot Vir Noot since 1991.

Background

He was born Johan Carl Stemmet on 9 February 1952 in Springbok. He was raised in Kleinzee, a diamond mine on the West Coast of Namaqualand.

He participated in cricket, rugby, athletics, swimming, and karate in school.

Education

Stemmet had his education in a high school in Cape Town. After his studies, he attended the University of Stellenbosch and the University of Cape Town. He studied Law, language, and education at higher institutions.

Career

After studying, he got employed as a teacher and taught Languages and History at Rondebosch Boys High School (1974-1980). He headed the Afrikaans First Language Department.

After leaving the educational sector, he became active in the entertainment circle. In 1980, he began to produce and present many programs for the South Africa Broadcasting Corporation.

Some of his production credits include many game shows. After 10 years, Johan and his friend Johan van Rensburg launched the show Noot vir Noot.

He produced a game show titled A Word Or 2 in 1997. The show was broadcast for almost a decade on SABC2. He is the brain behind producing Wise Up, an Educational game show on SABC2.

He has produced other shows like Fly The Beloved Country, a documentary inspired by his love of piloting gyro-copters. 

Stemmet also had a long-lasting singing career. He kicked off with the album Johan Stemmet Live at Devon Valley in 1972. His musical journey was a successful one, he dropped 12 albums between 1980 and 1999.

He went on a seven-year break and returned with Johan Stemmet – Inspirational Songs, in 2006. 

It climbed the charts so fast that it topped as No. 1 on the South African Gospel Top 20. In less than a week, within 4 days, it sold fourteen thousand copies.

Personal life

Johan Stemmet is happily married to Colleen. His wife works at Roosevelt High School, Johannesburg. She is the Deputy Headmistress and Head of the Mathematics Department at the School.

Their union is blessed with two children – Etienne and Carl. Both his sons followed in the footsteps of their father. Etienne also worked for SABC2, while in primary school, as a children’s presenter on KIDZ CAN.

He is studying for an Honours Degree in Information Science at the University of Pretoria (UP).

Carl was also a children’s presenter during his childhood days. He worked for M-Net and spent six years as a K-TV presenter. Today, he works as a movie director, scriptwriter, lecturer, and actor. He holds a Master’s degree in Drama.

He holds numerous awards since his debut in the entertainment industry.

Stemmet is also a recipient of three Avanti awards and one Artes Award. South African cultural organizations presented him with FAK and ATKV.
