Berita (born Gugulethu Khumalo; 27 June 1991 in Bulawayo City, Zimbabwe) is a multi-award-winning artist. She has gain popularity in Southern Africa most especially in South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Let’s say her voice is her superpower as she has made a name for herself as a singer. She also writes songs and has been entertaining music lovers with her amazing performances on screen and stage.
She has had a passion for art since she was a teenager, at the age of 18 to be precise. She started as a member of a church choir at Zhombe, where she practiced and developed more skills in singing.
Apart from singing and songwriting, the Bulawayo City-born singer also plays the guitar and produces music. With all this skill in the music industry, she has managed to become a household name.
She has written many songs that made waves in the Southern parts of the continent.

Her parents Mr. Khumalo and Mrs. Berita Khumalo were both educators in a school. She spent most of her childhood years in Bulawayo and Zhombe, where her parents taught.
To escape the economic instability in Zimbabwe, her family decided to relocate. With her family, she moved to New Zealand and relocated to South Africa in 2012.
Gugu came to South Africa to chase an academic career at Walter Sisulu University, Eastern, Cape Province. She studied for a Diploma in Financial Information Systems at the University. Later, Gugu enrolled for a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
She was welcomed into a Christian family, this in a way helps her career today. Gugu took part in the choir in the local church she attended.
During academic sessions, she lived with her parents while on vacations she lived with her grandparents. Initially, she wasn’t interested in doing music until she was done with her A-levels in New Zealand.
Upon learning to play the piano, she developed an interest in music and started to write a few songs when she was eighteen. The passion grew so strong that she bought herself a guitar.
Her parents did not like the passion that came out of the blues and decided to relocate her. They then sent her to study in their mother’s land.
Even with that, her love for music was barely affected and she moved with her musical instruments. What followed was her debut! Her first album Conquering Spirit was loved by many music listeners and earned her an award.
The singer has released many popular songs, she has made a name for herself after Oliver Mtukudzi introduced her to the industry.
She has dropped several other albums that housed several hit tracks that earned her a spot in the household name in her motherland. Ever since her debut, she has been making a huge impact in the music industry with her songs.
In 2017, she released the album titled Berita, earlier in 2015 she dropped Eyodidi. Other albums she has dropped include; “Songs in The Key of Love (2020)”, “Songs of Employment (2014)”, and “Uthuthand’Umuntu (2011)”.
She boasts of over eleven years in the music industry and her way of entertaining people has been recognized. She has bagged several awards, honors, and recognitions by many notable awards sponsors.
In 2019, she took home the Music artist of the year, the Zimbabwe Achievers Awards, and Best Female, Eastern Cape Music Awards in 2017.
In 2016, Gugu bagged the Music artist of the year, Zimbabwe Achievers Awards. Earlier she had smiled home with the Songwriter of the year, Wawela Music Awards in 2015.
In 2015, she also received the Rising Star of the year at the South African Afro Music Awards. In 2013 at the Metro Fm Music Awards, she went home with the Best African pop album.
At the hotly contested 8th annual SATMAs, Gugu was nominated for the Best Afro-soul Artist.
In 2018, she suffered heartbreak but has found love again. Reports covered that Berita’s boyfriend is very instrumental in rejuvenating her life.
In an Instagram post, she left a heartwarming birthday for her husband Nhlamulo. She uploaded a snap of them together and left the caption.
