Benni McCarthy (born Benedict Saul McCarthy; 12 November 1977 in Cape Town) is a former South African footballer. He also coached Cape Town City FC, a club in PSL South Africa, as head coach.

His career as a footballer started at a local side called Young Pirates. The team was then managed by his uncles. Later, Benni joined Crusaders, a local amateur club.

At the age of 17, Benni was signed by Seven Stars, a first division club.

Football Career

He kicked off his soccer career by playing for Seven Stars. As a player in the team, he scored a total of 13 goals.

After showcasing an exceptional performance, he moved to Cape Town Spurs on transfer.

After a few years in his PSL team, he was sold to Ajax F.C. He continued being exceptional and scored 9 goals. There Benni won his first major trophy in Europe.

He moved to Celta Vigo, a Spanish club after he was sold for 6 million euros. This transfer made him the most expensive South African player in his time.

Due to his poor performance in his new team, he went on loan to F.C Porto. He won the golden boot at Porto after he scored a total number of 20 goals in 23 appearances.

He also won the UEFA Champions League (2003-2004) in F.C Porto under Jose Mourinho.

He also made appearances in the English Premier League after playing for Blackburn Rovers. He scored a total number of 52 goals. Benni also played for West Ham United before returning to the South African PSL.

On returning, he played for giants Orlando Pirates and scored 10 league goals. With his help, they retained their league title in the 2011-2012 season.
