Basetsana Julia “Bassie” Kumalo (born March 29, 1974), known professionally as Basetsana Kumalo, née Makgalemele, is a South African businessperson and television personality. She is prominent for being the titleholder of a beauty pageant.
Bassie is also celebrated for being a renowned model, in 1994, she took home, Miss South Africa. Still in ’94, she made it to the first runner-up in Miss World pageantry. She also sat as a judge at the 2016 Miss South Africa beauty pageant.
She has been in the beauty industry for decades now, specifically since 1990. The beautiful and bold woman has claimed the winning prices of many pageants held in South Africa.

She was born Basetsana Makgalemele on 29 March 1974 in Soweto, South Africa. Her parent’s names are Philip Makgalemele and Beatrice Makgalemele.
She grew up in an average South African home with her father being a bus driver while her mother is a school teacher.
Basetsana has a brother and also two sisters, while they grew up, they would make sandwiches to sell during football matches over the weekends. She lost her father in 2003 and later in 2006, her mother died.
She began to study at Thabisang Primary School in Soweto. Later, she furthered at Trinity Secondary School in Lenasia. After matriculating from the school, Kumalo enrolled at the University of Venda and majored in an Education course. She also attended the Damelin.
At 16, she became the titleholder of Miss Soweto between 1990 and 1991. Basetsana entered into the Miss South Africa pageant and won the crown.
As the reigning Miss SA, Khumalo became the presenter on the lifestyle TV show Top Billing. She entered into a partnership with the producer of the show Patience Stevens.
Tswelopele Productions was launched with the celebrated beauty owning a 50% stake. The best product from the company is the Top Billing television show which was produced for SABC3.
Later in 1999, Tswelopele had to merge with Union Alliance Media. It was listed on the JSE Securities Exchange in South Africa.
In 2001, the celebrated model became a director at the Gauteng Travel Academy. She was present at the final of the Miss South Africa 2016 beauty pageant as the Guest Judge.

Basetsana Kumalo is married to Romeo Kumalo, an executive at Vodacom. Her husband also has on-screen experience after working as a broadcaster. The couple began to date in 1997 and after three years, they got married in 2000.
The couple is blessed with three children, Nkosinathi Gabriel born in 2005, uShaka Kgositsile Emmanuel born in 2012, and Bontle ba Morena Jasmine Kumalo born in 2014.
She although dates a professional boxer called Dingaan Thobela. Together with her husband and children, she resides in the city of Johannesburg, South Africa.
She made it on the list of 100 Greatest South Africans in 2004, appearing on number 74. Kumalo received the Fashion Icon Award from Cape Town Fashion Festival.
She was a Femina Magazine nominee for the top 10 most glamorous women in South Africa. The Sunday Times and Elle Magazine voted her in the TV Style Awards as the most stylish female magazine/entertainment show host.
Basetsana received an honorary scholarship for Overseas Studies from Nelson Mandela in 1994.
